Looking for an alternative to Quickbooks Desktop?
As you probably already know - Intuit is shutting down QuickBooks Desktop on May 31, 2025.
They say it’s about moving to the cloud and newer tech. But users are unhappy.
35% of Quickbooks revenue comes from the Desktop version, and many customers have built entire workflows around it.
The difference between Quickbooks Desktop and Online versions?
The old QB Desktop worked by saving data as a file on your computer. It gave you more features, full control and no reliance on internet.
However it's wasn't very mobile and if your host computer is affected your data could be corrupted or lost.
On the other side Quickbooks Online, while having scalability of the cloud, is criticized for being buggy and slow with long loading times.
For many, it’s a downgrade. We used to build fast reliable apps that always worked regardless of connection.
Now, we went to the opposite extreme: online-only apps that break without internet, introduce latency, and disrupt workflows.
But there’s a better way: Offline-first with real-time sync.
This is how iconic apps like Linear and Figma are built.
And this is how we’re building Modernbanc!
Imagine accounting software that's fast, with no loading times, where every interaction is instant like in a spreadsheet.
